Welcome to Allover Diaries, where we get to know the inspiring people who wear our overalls and the adventures they take in them.
For this edition, we spoke with Stephanie Buehler, a film photographer known as the “documentarian” of her friend group, about her adventures from coast to coast.
Tell us a little about why you are who you are today.
I grew up in Florida, and that’s where I met my wife while we were in college. I feel like everything really started then. Before this point in my life, I didn’t really have hobbies or know what I was into… I was just kind of coasting.
When I met my wife, she introduced me to traveling and great food. Just one example is that I used to think beer was vile until I met her, and then she introduced me to craft beer. That was such a defining moment in my life, meeting her. She opened my eyes. And together, we’ve formed our own views and perspectives.
After school, we both went into healthcare for its stability, but in reality, it allowed us to travel. Our travel contracts had us bopping around for three years with our three dogs coast to coast: Boston, Sonoma, Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine, Alaska. And then we came to Colorado full-time. But during those years of traveling, I picked up film photography.
I bought a camera in 2018, and it sat on the shelf for years as a decorative piece, but being immersed in all of the beauty while traveling forced me to just start capturing it and figuring out how to shoot photography.
I mean, old film cameras force you to learn manual shooting pretty quickly. So I learned the basics, started posting, and then joined this massive film community that’s all over Instagram.
It’s mostly been a hobby and a way to document our travels. And we used to spend fifteen minutes trying to take the right photo, right? But with film, you just shoot it, hope for the best, and move on.
What are your favorite subjects to shoot?
The outdoors. I love chasing light: sunrises and sunsets. My absolute favorite thing to shoot are star trails, but that requires staying up late, and I don’t do that as much anymore. But, it’s so amazing to see that on film. This old ass camera can capture the night sky.
Who are the people that inspire you most?
My friends. The community that I’ve built is very down-to-earth, cool people. People who enjoy nature and the simple things. Most of my friends aren’t even on social media. I call myself the documentarian, so I’ll capture our travels and hangs… but we’re always in the moment. Everything is very authentic.
Tell us about your perfect day from start to finish.
Definitely exploring a new place. I am so energized by going somewhere new, and that could be a new city or a new area of Colorado I’ve never experienced. Ideally, there’s a morning hike involved where we get up for sunrise and enjoy the beautiful views with my dogs. Then, to a brewery, because a beer tastes so much better after you work for it. To end the day, I go out to eat with my friends and order everything on the menu to share with them. That, to me, is a perfect day.
What do you love most about your Allovers?
I like overalls in general, and I hate putting outfits together. And overalls are easy! Throw it on with a tank top, and that’s your outfit. I get so many compliments on my Allovers. Not only that, but I have to pee a lot when I’m on the trails. The side zipper really is super handy.
